ABB
ABBNotes
Need an azipod? They are ship propulsors driven by electric motors, mounted external to the hull. The entire motor azimuths. This allows you to develop maximum thrust in any direction and offers great vessel maneuverability. ABB offers azipods in several different sizes
Products
Taken from ABB Website:
The improved fuel efficiency of the Azipod propulsion is based on the optimum water flow to the propellers due to pulling propellers. Compared to the normal shaft line vessel the improvement in hydrodynamic efficiency can be up to 15 % depending on the application.
Due to azimuthing thruster principle the Azipod vessel has an excellent manoeuvrability characteristics. This improves the vessel safety but as well minimizes the harbour manoeuvring time and can in some cases may eliminate the need of harbour tug assistance.
The azimuthing electric propulsion has proved to be the most efficient propulsion system in ice breakers. Further with Azipod it is possible to build ice going cargo vessels, which can operate without ice breaker assistance.
Azipod propulsion is based on electric propulsion concept where generator sets can be freely located to the vessel. Further many systems inside the ship hull (propulsion motors, long shaftlines, stern thrusters and rudders) are not needed. This gives a lot of freedom to the ship design and construction. Space can be saved inside the vessel which can be used for extra payload or even may make it possible to build a smaller ship. From shipbuilding poit of view a lot of installation hours can be saved due to simpler construction.
Azipod product family includes the following products
– Azipod CO: Open water applications up to 4.5 MW
– Azipod XO: Open water applications up to 20 MW
– Azipod CZ: Thruster unit for high thrust applications, 4.5 MW
– Azipod VI: Ice going ship applications for different ice classes
– Azipod XC: Azipod for Contra Rotating applications

Ballast Technologies Inc
Ballast Technologies IncNotes
Ballast Technologies provide fixed ballast installations. We often used fixed ballast to correct stability problems with vessels. Permanent ballast should be easy to install with minimum labor. Of course, it must have significant weight. Ideally, we also prefer to customize the density of the ballast and ensure we completely fill a compartment. The following information comes from the company website.
What is Perma Ballast
Perma Ballast® is high density fixed ballast used throughout the world for Ships, Boats, Floating and Gravity Based Production Platforms, Bridges and Counterweights
THE PERMA BALLAST® GLOBAL ADVANTAGE
Perma Ballast® is lead-free, non-toxic, non-corrosive, chemically inert, and environmentally safe, often incorporating iron ore such as magnetite or QCM.
Perma Ballast® will not cause gases or vapors to be generated, even after many years of service.
Perma Ballast® is thoroughly tested in BTI’s laboratories to ensure proper density, uniformity and stability. BTI also performs continuous onsite quality controlduring installation.
Perma Ballast® is avalable in a wide range of installed densities, from 130 lbs/ft3 – 325 lbs/ft3 (2.1 – 5.2 metric tons/m3).
Perma Ballast® is removable and reusable.
Perma Ballast® is recognized and accepted by certifying and regulatory agencies around the world, including ABS, Bureau Veritas, U.S. DOT, U.S. Coast Guard, Lloyd’s Register, Germanischer Lloyd, and Det Norske Veritas.
THE PERMA BALLAST® PROCESS
Perma Ballast® specialists make a site visit to inspect the vessel and installation location and then draft customized operating and safety plan.
Perma Ballast® is installed by BTI’s experienced personnel using state-of-the-art equipment for safe, rapid and efficient mobilization, installation and demobilization. To minimize inconvenience to our customers, BTI pumps from dockside and offers the option of continuous installation, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Perma Ballast® is engineered to ensure even distribution throughout all available tank space.
Perma Ballast® consolidates as it is installed. The result is non-shifting fixed ballast that remains removable and reusable.
Notes
Sometimes, we need to add ballast to an existing ship, usually to maintain ship stability. But the logistics of putting a lot of weight into unused sections of a ship can be fairly daunting. And then the weight must be safely secured. Ballast-crete offers a labor-saving alternative to traditional ingot ballast.
Product
Ballast-Crete® is a pre-blended combination of water and inorganic, non-toxic, granular and ground fines that can be produced in density ranges of 130 lb. (S.G. 2.08) to 325 lb. (S.G. 5.21) per cubic foot, or higher. During installation, its flowability and water retentiveness compares to a ready-mix mortar although it does not contain portland cement. After installation, Ballast-Crete® firms to a semi-solid mass.
Ballast-Crete® is designed to meet U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, American Bureau of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas & Bureau Veritas specifications.
Due to its thixotropic nature, Ballast-Crete® can be removed in discrete quantities for the repair or modification of your ship.

Carlsen Group
Carlsen GroupNotes
Carlsen provides equipment and engineering services for bulk material handling. Cement, sand, and even grains. Carlsen has the equipment to efficiently and safely unload it.
Products
Carlsen offers a variety of different systems for bulk cargo handling. Which system to select can depend on many things: efficiency, the specific cargo to handle, safety. Carlsen representatives can help you select the best system for your purposes. All text taken from Carlsen website. (http://www.carlsengroup.com)
Double Reloader System
The D.R. (Double Reloader) system consists of two tanks that alternate between being filled by vacuum and emptied by pressure. When the first reloader tank is full, the vacuum valve closes, and the vacuum valve to the second tank open. The second tank is then filled while at the same time the first tank is emptied to recieving silos by means of compressed air. In this way a nearly continous conveying process is achieved.
Screw Conveyor System
The Carlsen mechanical system uses screw conveyors for vertical conveying and airslides or horizontal screw conveyors for horizontal converying The holds are equipped with fluidized bottoms. The material flows from the fluidized bottom through a flow control gate into a vertical screw converyor. From the vertical screw conveyor on deck to the centre of the ship. The material is conveyed on shore either by a mechanical unloading boom or by a pneumatic pressure system.
Source: http://www.carlsengroup.com/products/screw-conveyor-system/%5B/caption%5D
E3 Cargo System
The Carlsen E3 Cargo System provides almost continous unloading to shore, it is utilizing the pressure from compressors and direct feeding from the hold to the blow tanks. The advantage is that the system uses only one conveyor from cargo hold to silo.
Conveyor Loading System
All the Conveyor Loading systems (Air slide Loading System & Screw Conveyor Loading System) can be provided with the following options.
- Option: Pneumatic Loading with Cyclone
To accommodate for pneumatic loading of material from shore into the ship - Option: Truck Loading

Cathelco
CathelcoNotes
Cathelco provides impressed current systems to prevent corrosion of hull plating, pipework antifouling, and a variety of other products.
Products
The following description comes from Cathelco’s website (http://www.cathelco.com)
Cathelco are world leading designers and manufacturers of equipment for ships and offshore installations.
Their product range includes marine pipework anti-fouling (AF) systems and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems to safeguard the hulls of commercial and naval vessels against corrosion. Cathelco Seafresh specialises in the production of reverse osmosis desalinators (watermakers) for yachts, commercial and naval vessels. The offshore energy sector continues to gain in importance
Cathelco supply AF and ICCP systems for offshore platforms, semi-submersibles, FPSOs and FSOs. In the renewable energy market they have developed advanced ICCP systems to protect monopile, jacket and tripod offshore wind turbines.
After considerable research and development, Cathelco are planning to launch a unique ballast water treatment (BWT) system in 2013 based on a combination of filtration and UV sterilisation.
Cathelco are represented globally through a network of agent/installers.
Impressed Cathodic Current Protection
Although modern hull coatings provide some protection against corrosion they do not offer a complete solution. For this reason, most operators choose to protect their vessels with a purpose designed impressed current cathodic protection system.
Using an arrangement of hull mounted anodes and reference cells connected to a control panel(s), the system produces a more powerful external current to suppress the natural electro-chemical activity on the wetted surface of the hull.
This eliminates the formation of aggressive corrosion cells on the surface of plates and avoids the problems which can exist where dissimilar metals are introduced through welding or brought into proximity by other components such as propellers.
An essential feature of ICCP systems is that they constantly monitor the electrical potential at the seawater/hull interface and carefully adjust the output to the anodes in relation to this. Therefore, the system is much more effective and reliable than sacrificial anode systems where the level of protection is unknown and uncontrollable.

Strap Drum Conversions
A load strap drum option is offered for every standard model of Columbia winch and hoist. With hoist capacities to 5,600 lbs. and winch capacities to 11,000 lbs., Columbia strap drum models provide versatile load handling capability while eliminating the inherent disadvantages of wire rope or chain.
In addition to being easier to handle, inspect and install, straps eliminate load rotation problems associated with wire rope and chain. Unlike wire rope, straps wind smoothly without long lead distances to the drum. Straps do not require lubrication nor do they “jagger”, chip or spark.
For line pull and line speed performance, refer to the appropriate Columbia winch or hoist technical specification sheet.

Comap Controls
Comap ControlsNotes
ComAp manufacturers control systems for gensets, pumps, and propulsion engines. The number of features you get from their small boxes is really quite remarkable. You can also got the company website and download the configuration software for their boxes for free. Gives you a chance to play around and see what the control system is capable of before purchasing. The software does not require a link to the box to function.

Conventive Composites
Conventive CompositesNotes
This post specifically focuses on a material called Aptiform, by NetComposites. Aptiform provides a different type of structural composite material. Aptiform uses self-reinforced plastics. The major advantage is that these composites are recyclable, unlike many traditional composite materials.
Products
Product description, from Aptiform website:
The Aptiform moulding process has been specifically developed for the efficient manufacture of components from self-reinforced plastics, based on the results of extensive development work undertaken by NetComposites in collaboration with leading industrial companies and universities.
The unique forming process allows OEMs to benefit from the light weight, recyclability, high impact performance and low cost offered by self-reinforced plastics – a family of materials with both fibre and matrix made from the same polymer. These materials offer a unique balance of properties and cost, particularly suited to radio transparencies and ballistic components.
The family of materials includes self-reinforced polypropylene and PET, with developments currently being made in polyamides and polyethylene. Specific strength and stiffness are approximately equal to glass-reinforced polymers, whilst properties such as impact performance and radio-transparency far exceed conventional materials.
We’re currently involved in component manufacture and product development in aerospace, defence, personal protective equipment, leisure craft, luggage and low volume automotive. The material benefits exploited by these sectors are radar/radio transparency, high impact performance/ballistic properties, weight and recyclability.
The Aptiform moulding technique is based on the results of extensive development work undertaken in collaboration with customers and materials suppliers, and there are only a handful of companies worldwide that have the ability to form this family of materials.
Aptiform is a brand of NetComposites.
