The Problem
Our Client came to us with a bold, unconventional idea: a floating resort of solar-powered, off-grid houseboats designed to let guests drift through the Caribbean.
Other engineers told them it was too risky. Between structural questions, regulatory unknowns, and the challenges of offshore construction, the concept was risky and challenging to build.
The Solution
DMS helped turn that big idea into a safe, seaworthy design. We tackled the structural engineering, ensured vessel stability, and collaborated with the Client’s interior designer to fit the layout around the architecture. We also planned for construction in low-infrastructure shipyards by designing the vessel for simple fabrication, so no expensive tools were required.
To prepare for real-world challenges, we optimized the design for long-distance towing and created a ballasting system that would allow the vessel to settle on the seabed of shallow water lagoons during hurricanes for protection.
The Results
Our Client walked away with a flexible, buildable, and storm-ready platform that preserved their creative vision.
